Masala Moong Dal

Ingredients
- 1 cup Moong Dal (split yellow lentils)
- 1 Onion, finely chopped
- 1 Tomato, finely chopped
- 1 Green Chili, slit
- 1 teaspoon Ginger-Garlic Paste
- 1/2 teaspoon Turmeric Powder
- 1 teaspoon Red Chili Powder
- 1 teaspoon Cumin Seeds
- A pinch of Asafoetida (Hing)
- 2 tablespoons Ghee or Oil
- Salt to taste
- Fresh Coriander Leaves for garnishing
Instructions
- Wash the moong dal thoroughly and soak it in water for 30 minutes.
- Heat ghee or oil in a pressure cooker. Add cumin seeds and asafoetida.
- When the seeds splutter, add the chopped onion and sauté until golden brown.
- Add ginger-garlic paste and green chili. Sauté for a minute.
- Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn soft.
- Add turmeric powder and red chili powder. Mix well.
- Drain the water from the soaked dal and add it to the cooker.
- Add 3 cups of water and salt. Stir well.
- Close the lid and pressure cook for 3-4 whistles.
- Let the pressure release naturally. Open the lid and garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
- Serve hot with rice or roti.
