Masala Moong Dal

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Moong Dal (split yellow lentils)
  • 1 Onion, finely chopped
  • 1 Tomato, finely chopped
  • 1 Green Chili, slit
  • 1 teaspoon Ginger-Garlic Paste
  • 1/2 teaspoon Turmeric Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Red Chili Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Cumin Seeds
  • A pinch of Asafoetida (Hing)
  • 2 tablespoons Ghee or Oil
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh Coriander Leaves for garnishing

Instructions

  1. Wash the moong dal thoroughly and soak it in water for 30 minutes.
  2. Heat ghee or oil in a pressure cooker. Add cumin seeds and asafoetida.
  3. When the seeds splutter, add the chopped onion and sauté until golden brown.
  4. Add ginger-garlic paste and green chili. Sauté for a minute.
  5. Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn soft.
  6. Add turmeric powder and red chili powder. Mix well.
  7. Drain the water from the soaked dal and add it to the cooker.
  8. Add 3 cups of water and salt. Stir well.
  9. Close the lid and pressure cook for 3-4 whistles.
  10. Let the pressure release naturally. Open the lid and garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
  11. Serve hot with rice or roti.
